Male gymnasts wear men's gymnastics competition shirts called singlets, which are similar to women’s gymnastics leotards, but with longer leg openings that are similar to tight-fitting shorts. Shorts or pants are worn over the singlet, depending on the event or the apparatus being trained or competed on.
Men’s gymnastics pants are worn for the pommel horse, still rings, high bar, and parallel bars, whereas shorts are worn for floor exercises and vault.
While some gymnasts perform barefoot, many wrap their feet or wear gymnastics slippers or gymnastics socks to provide extra support for their arches and ankles, prevent slipping, prevent friction-related injuries, and reduce the chance of injury during high-impact maneuvers. Socks are required for gymnasts competing with pants.
